Alphabet - Google's parent company - has continued to see its quarterly profits boosted by strong advertising sales on mobile devices.
Revenue in the April-to-June period rose 21.3% to $21.5bn (£16.3bn), from $17.7bn a year earlier.
Net income for the quarter was $4.9bn, up from $3.9bn a year ago. Alphabet's share price rose 6% in after-hours trading,
The rise follows a 17% increase in first-quarter revenues.
Google also made progress in the video market, which has put it in fierce competition with Facebook and Twitter.
The firm's chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said it had used artificial intelligence to make better video recommendations to users on YouTube, which it owns.

NCC lifts ban onregulatory services to MTN

Everest Amaefule, Abuja
The Nigerian Communications Commission has
lifted the ban on regulatory services which it
placed on MTN Nigeria Communications Limited.
NCC had placed ban on providing regulatory
services to MTN for several regulatory
infractions.
A statement issued by Director of Public Affairs
at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said the lifting of the
ban was in no way related to the fine imposed
on MTN by the regulatory agency on October 20,
2015, for failure to deactivate 5.2 million
improperly registered SIM cards as the
infractions predated this fine.
The letter lifting suspension of regulatory
services to MTN signed by Mr. Efosa Idehen,
Head, Compliance, Monitoring/Enforcement and
Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye, Head, Legal and
Regulatory Services specifically stated that the
lifting of the suspension was as a result of
several letters from MTN to the NCC requesting
for the lifting.
The letter stated, “We have reviewed MTN’s
plea and also took into consideration the fact
that MTN has abated all the infractions that
gave rise to the suspension of regulatory
services by the commission.”
The infractions included but not limited to
tariffs and promotions by MTN in letters from
NCC of May 4, 2015, May 9, 2015 and May 25,
2015 respectively to withdraw unapproved
tariffs and promotions specifically MTN Trutalk,
MTN Best II promotions among others.
The ban also followed failure by MTN to pay
some Annual Operating Levies.
Compliance checks on MTN showed that it had
failed and deliberately refused to comply with
the directives issued by the commission, Ojobo
said.
In spite of that, it continued to introduce
additional promotions in utter disregard for
NCC’s directive, contrary to the Nigerian
Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and Regulation
8(2) of the Enforcement Regulations 2005 and
the relevant provision in the Guidelines for
Advertisement and Promotion, he further
explained.
He added that further communication with MTN
in letters dated June 19, 2015 and July 13, 2015
did not in any way discourage the operator from
the infractions; thus the imposition of the ban.
However, Ojobo said, “Having reviewed MTN’s
plea therefore and in consideration that the
operator has abated all the infractions, the NCC
hereby lifts the suspension urging MTN to
ensure that it maintains good regulatory
standing with the Commission at all times to
avoid future occurrence.
“The commission expects total compliance with
NCA, 2003, Regulations and the Terms and
Conditions of Licences issued to MTN and will
not hesitate to impose necessary sanctions
where MTN flouts any provision of the foregoing
regulatory instruments.

Email inventor Ray Tomlinson dead aged 74 sparking wave of tributes for computing legend

Ray Tomlinson
Ray Tomlinson: The founder of email died following a suspected heart attack

The computing legend who invented email has died aged 74.
The 'godfather of email' Ray Tomlinson died following a suspected heart attackyesterday morning, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
Tomlinson was a part a team of computer programmers at research and design company Bolt Beranek and Newman (now BBN Technologies ).
In 1971, he developed an application that allowed messages to be sent back and forth between computers.
He used @ to separate the user name from the host name.

In an interview with NPR from 2009, he said: "The keyboards were about 10 feet apart…I could wheel my chair from one to the other and type a message on one, and then go to the other, and then see what I had tried to send.”

By the 1990s email had become a pillar of the Internet alongside the World Wide Web and New Yorker Tomlinson was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012.
His official biography page on the Internet Hall of Fame website praises Tomlinson for "fundamentally changing the way people communicate".
"Today, tens of millions of email-enabled devices are in use every day. Email remains the most popular application, with over a billion and a half users spanning the globe and communicating across the traditional barriers of time and space," his citation reads.

Scientists are building a mini DEATH STAR to protect Earth from killer asteroids

Scientists at the University of California claim a spacecraft loaded with lasers could be our best hope for deflecting a killer asteroid

Main-Scientists-develop-mini-Death-Star-to-protect-us-from-asteroids
DE-STAR would zap asteroids with high-powered lasers
It sounds like something straight out of Star Wars, but scientists are reportedly planning to build a mini "Death Star" to protect Earth from asteroids, comets, and other space objects.
The idea is to put a spacecraft into orbit around the Earth, armed with high-energy lasers that could vaporise any asteroids that look like they might collide with our planet.
The process, known as sublimation, would create a blast of gas that would push the object into a new path.
The concept is being developed by researchers at the University of California, who claim that - unlike some of the ideas that have been proposed involving "kinetic impactors", "robotic mining" and "gravity tractors" - this could actually work.
The so-called DE-STAR (Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation) would have a 330ft-wide laser array that could divert asteroids 330ft in diameter from a distance of two million miles.
Lasers would vapourise asteroids and push them off course
A similar, much smaller system called DE-STARLITE is also being considered, which would travel alongside asteroids, slowly deflecting them over a long period of time.
The scientists claim that a 20 kW version of DE-STARLITE operating for 15 years could deflect a 1,066ft asteroid at a distance equal to Earth's diameter.
A 1 MW version could deflect all known threats up to 1,640ft in diameter with five-year laser activity.
Although DE-STARLITE would be much less expensive, it would be ineffective at deflecting targets on short notice due to the time required for it to deflect the target asteroid.
The DE-STAR system would therefore be a last line of defense on short notice.

Asteroid approaching planet Earth
"Generally speaking, the technology is available today," said Qicheng Zhang of the University of California, Santa Barbara, told Astrowatch.net   .
"The main challenge with building a full DE-STAR is the necessary scale to be effective."
The scientists have tested the technique on earth, by using lasers to blast a piece of basalt – an igneous rock similar in composition to some asteroids. They found that when it glowed white-hot, it began to lose mass.
However, the researchers note that the effectiveness of a deflection mission would depend strongly on the target.
"If, say, a 100-metre-wide asteroid were found today on a collision course with Earth next week, directed energy would not be a viable solution as that would require a very large laser array that would be far bigger than an equally effective single-use impactor or explosive," Zhang explained.

Could DE-STAR help mankind avoid a dramatic end?
"If, on the other hand, we find that same asteroid 30 years before impact, directed energy would be very effective, even with 10 kW lasers which are far below the power of many lasers in possession by the US military today.”
The news comes as an asteroid is indeed headed for Earth. The space rock, dubbed 2013 TX68, is expected to speed by our planet   on Tuesday March 8.
The asteroid is hidden by the sun's glare , which makes it very difficult to track accurately.
Calculations show that 2013 TX68 could shoot past the Earth well within the ring of geostationary communications and GPS satellites stationed 22,300 miles above sea level.
At the other limit of its predicted range it could remain as far out as 40 times the distance to the moon.
